چکیده

market-based control, economic agents, bargaining, autonomous agent Market-Based Control (MBC) is a resource allocation and control technique where multi-agent systems are built to resemble free-market economies. The aim is that MBC systems exhibit the same decentralization, robustness, and capacity for self-organization as do real economies. MBC systems are relevant to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in at least two ways: first, the agents in a MBC system need to be robot-like in their ability to autonomously coordinate perception and action in dynamic and uncertain environments that include other agents; second, MBC systems could be used as the control technologies for robots and other “intelligent” autonomous agents. We critically review a selection of MBC systems. We argue that the MBC systems reviewed here are either implicitly reliant on centralized knowledge, or require human operators and hence are not truly automatic. We identify a major issue in creating truly decentralized and automatic MBC systems: the need for the system's agents to be capable of bargaining behaviors. Following this, we briefly summarize our current results and ongoing work in creating multi-agent systems where each autonomous agent has the ability to bargain with other agents. We demonstrate that markets composed of such agents exhibit desirable behaviors, and that such agents could form the basis of truly decentralized MBC systems.

A Decentralized Market with Common Values Uncertainty: Non-Steady States¤

We analyze a market where (i) trade proceeds by random and anonymous pairwise meetings with bargaining; (ii) agents are asymmetrically informed about the value of the traded good; and (iii) no new entrants are allowed once the market is open. We show that information revelation and e±ciency never obtain in equilibrium, even as discounting is removed. This holds whether the asymmetry is two-side...

Optimal Monetary and Fiscal Policies in a Search Theoretic Model of Monetary Exchange∗

Search models of monetary exchange commonly assume that terms of trade in decentralized markets are determined via Nash bargaining. Bargaining frictions add to the classical intertemporal distortion present in most monetary models, whereby agents work today to obtain cash that can be used only in future transactions. More important, bargaining frictions may cause underproduction in decentralize...

Decentralized Bargaining in Matching Markets: Efficient Stationary Equilibria and the Core

This paper studies market clearing in matching markets. The model is non-cooperative, fully decentralized, and in Markov strategies. Workers and firms bargain with each other to determine who will be matched to whom and at what terms of trade. Once a worker-firm pair reach agreement they exit the market. Alternative possible matches affect agents’ bargaining positions. We ask when do such marke...

An Open Electronic Bargaining System

In the future, electronic exchanges will be a major facilitator of negotiation systems and a driver for new forms of bargaining and matchmaking between potential trading partners. Most existing bargaining systems are based on formalized auction schemes which need a centralized authority (an auctioneer). With the development of decentralized networks, we need new forms of electronic bargaining w...

Shop 'Til You Drop II: Collective Adaptive Behavior of Simple Autonomous Trading Agents in Simulated Retail Markets

In a companion paper [9] we argued that human economic interactions, particularly bargaining and trading in market environments, can be considered as adaptive behaviors, and that the tools and techniques of adaptive behavior research can be profitably employed in modeling naturally-occUlTing markets or constructing artificial market-based systems. H groups of simple artificial agents interact t...
